NEWS: Nebula Awards Nomination Period Now Open + Free Stuff for SFWA Members

This year’s Nebula Awards nomination period is now open.

From November 15 to February 15, Active and Associate SFWA members may submit nominations for the Nebula Awards. Nominations may be submitted through the online ballot, available here. For more information, visit SFWA’s How to Vote page.

To assist you in finding material to nominate, I’ve assembled this post to list everything that I worked on in 2014.

  • Most of Lightspeed‘s original fiction from 2014 is available online (and also much of the 2014 original fiction is available as a podcast). If you are a SFWA member, you can also download an ebook (epub/mobi/pdf/doc) compilation of all 2014’s original material from the SFWA forums.
  • All of Nightmare‘s original fiction from 2014 is available online (and also much of the 2014 original fiction is available as a podcast). If you are a SFWA member, you can also download an ebook (epub/mobi/pdf/doc) compilation of all 2014’s original material from the SFWA forums.
  • Selected stories from The End is Nigh and The End is Now are available online. If you are a SFWA member, also download an ebook (epub/mobi/pdf/doc) of the anthologies (NIGH | NOW).
  • Selected stories from Help Fund My Robot Army & Other Improbable Crowdfunding Projects are available online. If you are a SFWA member, also download an ebook (epub/mobi/pdf/doc) of the anthology.
  • Selected stories from Dead Man’s Hand are available online.
  • Selected stories from Robot Uprisings are available online. All of the original shorts stories, novelettes, and novella from the anthology are also available to SFWA members on the SFWA forums.

Also, here is a spreadsheet showing the word counts of all the material I published in 2014 in Lightspeed, Nightmare, and in the abovementioned anthologies.

NEWS: THE END IS NOW Now Available!

The second volume of The Apocalypse Triptych, THE END IS NOW, is now on sale. As you probably know, this is the second of a series of three anthologies I’m co-editing/publishing with Wool-author Hugh Howey.

If you’re one of the readers who read and enjoyed volume one: Thank you! We’re glad to see you returning for volume two. You made the first volume a resounding success, and we couldn’t be more thrilled with both how well the book’s done in the marketplace—it got all the way up to #11 on the Amazon bestseller list—and with how well it’s been received by readers and critics.

If you’re a reader who has not read The End is Nigh: Welcome! And fear not: You needn’t have read the first volume in order to enjoy the stories in this one. Although several of the stories in The End is Now are continuations of storylines that began in The End is Nigh, we’re confident that the authors have provided sufficient context that you can jump into these stories without any prior knowledge.

THE END IS NOW edited by John Joseph Adams & Hugh Howey

Famine. Death. War. Pestilence. These are the harbingers of the biblical apocalypse, of the End of the World. In science fiction, the end is triggered by less figurative means: nuclear holocaust, biological warfare/pandemic, ecological disaster, or cosmological cataclysm.

But before any catastrophe, there are people who see it coming. During, there are heroes who fight against it. And after, there are the survivors who persevere and try to rebuild.

THE APOCALYPSE TRIPTYCH will tell their stories.

Edited by acclaimed anthologist John Joseph Adams and bestselling author Hugh Howey, The Apocalypse Triptych is a series of three anthologies of apocalyptic fiction. THE END IS NIGH focuses on life before the apocalypse. THE END IS NOW turns its attention to life during the apocalypse. And THE END HAS COME explores life after the apocalypse.

THE END IS NIGH is about the match.

THE END HAS COME is about what will rise from the ashes.

THE END IS NOW is about the conflagration.

NEWS: LIGHTSPEED Wins the Hugo Award!

Prior to this year, it’s been my great honor to have been nominated for six Hugo Awards for editing: Three for LIGHTSPEED in the Semiprozine category and three for myself personally in the Best Editor (Short Form) category. Up until now, both LIGHTSPEED and myself had each been 0-3 in our respective categories.

This year both LIGHTSPEED and I were again nominated in the two aforementioned categories. The big difference this year is that the STREAK HAS BEEN BROKEN: LIGHTSPEED won the Hugo Award for Best Semiprozine! I immediately started a new losing streak by losing the Best Editor (Short Form) award to Ellen Datlow, but naturally I’m thrilled that LIGHTSPEED took home the prize. And honestly if I had had to choose which of the two categories I would win, I would definitely have chosen LIGHTSPEED winning Best Semiprozine, so I’m not even a little bit sad.

NEWS: HELP FUND MY ROBOT ARMY!!! and Other Improbable Crowdfunding Projects is now on sale!

HELP FUND MY ROBOT ARMY!!! & Other Improbable Crowdfunding Projects, my new anthology about improbable, futuristic, magical & alternate-world crowdfunding projects, is now on sale!

HELP FUND MY ROBOT ARMY!!! & Other Improbable Crowdfunding Projects

COVER COPY:

If you’re a regular backer of Kickstarters, you’ve probably seen some unique crowdfunding projects in your time. But one thing all of those campaigns—boringly!—had in common was: They abided by the physical laws of the universe!

HELP FUND MY ROBOT ARMY!!! is an anthology of science fiction/fantasy stories told in the form of fictional crowdfunding pitches, using the components (and restrictions) of the format to tell the story. This includes but is not limited to: Project Goals, Rewards, User Comments, Project Updates, FAQs, and more. The idea is to replicate the feel of reading a crowdfunding pitch, so that even though the projects may be preposterous in the real world, they will feel like authentic crowdfunding projects as much as possible.

So if what you’ve always been looking for in a Kickstarter—and couldn’t find—was a project that allowed you to protect yourself from spoilers, buy wishes, find lost objects, or support a wildlife preserve for supernatural creatures, then HELP FUND MY ROBOT ARMY!!! & Other Improbable Crowdfunding Projects may be just the thing you’ve been looking for.

NEWS: THE END IS NIGH is a Kindle Daily Deal Today (6/21) — On Sale for $1.99!

THE END IS NIGH, the “pre-apocalypse” anthology I co-edited with Hugh Howey, is part of Amazon’s Kindle Daily Deal today (June 21). That means the ebook edition, which normally sells for $6.99, is on sale for just $1.99! That’s 22 stories, and more than 130,000 words for just under two bucks. (Note: The Kindle Daily Deal is for US customers only. Sorry!)

I think it’s a really great book naturally, but don’t take my word for it. Here’s what some reviewers have said about it:

  • The End Is Nigh is very good. Of course it is. Adams and Howey are a two-man tour-de-force of post-apocalyptic lit. … Ultimately, the best thing about The End Is Nigh is how elegantly it balances on the thin line between beauty and devastation. There’s no story in the book that didn’t break my heart at least a little, and there’s none of the twenty-two that hasn’t stuck with me, hard.” —Wired.com
  • “Even if you aren’t typically a fan of short stories, really do pick this up. If you love apocalypse stories, pick this up. Actually no matter what you like, pick this up…seriously.” —Seattle Geekly
  • “Destined to be a favorite among end-of-the-world enthusiasts.” —FEARnet

Additionally, the anthology has racked up 70 reviews over on Amazon and has a 4.3/5 average star rating.

Among the 22 stories it contains includes new, never-before-published stories by Paolo Bacigalupi, Hugh Howey, Seanan McGuire, Nancy Kress, Scott Sigler, Ben H. Winters, Charlie Jane Anders, Jonathan Maberry, Robin Wasserman, Tananarive Due, and many more. You can learn more about the anthology—and read free samples from the book—on its official website.
