NEWS: 2016 Hugo Award Finalists

I’m pleased to announce that Brooke Bolander’s story for Lightspeed, “And You Shall Know Her by the Trail of Dead,” which was previously announced as a Nebula Award and Sturgeon Award finalist, is now also a Hugo Award finalist! Lightspeed is no longer eligible in the semiprozine category (which it won the last two years), but I’m pleased to report that I have been nominated in the Best Editor, Short Form category. And last but not least, Alyssa Wong—whose story for Nightmare, “Hungry Daughters of Starving Mothers,” is a finalist for both the Nebula and Stoker—is a finalist this year for the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer. Major congrats to Brooke on the rare achievement of being nominated for both the Hugo and Nebula for the same work, and to Alyssa for netting a coveted Campbell nod in the same year she’s up for the Stoker and Nebula.

NEWS: Hugo Award Nomination Deadline is March 31

Nominations for the Hugo Awards closes March 31.

If you like a thing, and you think it’s deserving of a Hugo Award, nominate it! If you’re not familiar with a thing, but you saw it on a suggested nominations list or something of the sort, either read/watch it, and then nominate it because you like it, or don’t nominate it because you didn’t like it. Point being, please don’t nominate stuff just because it’s on somebody’s list somewhere; only nominate things you personally think are deserving.

NEWS: New Series by Carrie Vaughn Acquired for John Joseph Adams Books (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt)

In my new role as editor of John Joseph Adams Books for Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, I just acquired two books in a new series by Carrie Vaughn:

New York Times bestseller Carrie Vaughn’s BANNERLESS, a novel in which an investigator must discover the truth behind a mysterious death in a world where small communities struggle to maintain a ravaged civilization decades after environmental and economic collapse, to John Joseph Adams Books (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt), in a two-book deal, for publication in Spring 2017, by Seth Fishman at The Gernert Company. Fans of Carrie’s (and/or my work in the short form) may recognize from that description that the book is set in the same milieu as Carrie’s Hugo-nominated story, “Amaryllis,” which I originally published way back in issue #1 of Lightspeed, and also her story “Bannerless,” which appeared in my anthology, The End Has Come.

NEWS: Hugo Awards Nomination Period Now Open + Free Stuff for Worldcon Members

This year’s Hugo Awards nomination period is now open. The 2016 Hugo Awards will be presented in Kansas City, MO during MidAmeriCon II, the 74th World Science Fiction Convention (Aug. 17-21). Nominations close on March 31, 2016.

Anyone who was a voting member of the 2015, 2016, or 2017 Worldcons by January 31, 2016 is eligible to nominate. You may nominate only once, regardless of how many of those three Worldcons you are a member.

Nominations may be submitted through the online ballot, available here.

To assist you in finding material to nominate, I’ve assembled this post to list everything that I worked on in 2015. I’ve included the Destroy special issues here, though on those I was only publisher (not editor).

  • Most of Lightspeed‘s original fiction from 2015 is available online (and also much of the 2015 original fiction is available as a podcast).
  • Most of Nightmare‘s original fiction from 2015 is available online (and also much of the 2015 original fiction is available as a podcast).

This year’s Nebula Awards nomination period is now open.

From November 15 to February 15, Active and Associate SFWA members may submit nominations for the Nebula Awards. Nominations may be submitted through the online ballot, available here. For more information, visit SFWA’s How to Vote page.
