Space & Time Lives!

You may recall the SCI FI Wire piece I wrote about the Space & Time’s decision to call it quits with issue #100. Well, it seems the death knell was sounded too soon — the magazine’s been purchased and will continue under new ownership. Go behind the cut for the press release.

Space and Time Magazine to Continue Under New Ownership.

New York, NY – January 22, 2007 – Instead of the planned swan song to a forty-year-old showcase for great horror, fantasy, and science fiction, Issue #100 of Space and Time Magazine will serve as a summation of the past, and a herald of things to come. Owner Gordon Linzner, who previously announced his intention to retire from the magazine publishing business, is selling the venerable magazine to Hildy Silverman, who will take over later this month as publisher. Mr. Linzner will retain and continue to run Space and Time Books as a separate entity from the magazine.

Mr. Linzner founded the magazine in 1966 in a 20 page mimeographed side-stapled format while still in high school, initially as a showcase for his own writing and that of his friends. It has gone through several permutations to evolve into its current 8-1/2 x 11, color cover, 48 page format with newsstand distribution, and has figured in the early careers of authors such as Jeffrey Ford, Kevin J. Anderson, Josepha Sherman, Jeffrey Thomas, Charles de Lint, and many more. Having decided to retire in order to pursue other interests, including his writing and music careers, Mr. Linzner is nevertheless relieved that the magazine to which he has devoted so many years of time and attention will continue on. “I feel no trepidation at handing over the reins to Hildy, who is not only a fan and professional, but has the business acumen to take Space and Time to places I could not,” Mr. Linzner said. “Much as I look forward to following other, neglected pursuits, I’m also excited to watch — from a safe distance — as the magazine evolves under new leadership.”

Mr. Linzner will continue to assist behind the scenes for a few more issues, in order to facilitate a smooth transition. Afterward, he will serve in an advisory capacity as editor emeritus. Hildy Silverman, a freelance writer and editor of both fiction and nonfiction, will assume the role of editor-in-chief. As a fan of Space and Time, she plans to maintain its high standards for fiction, while also expanding its readership and diversifying content. “My immediate plans are to expand into new markets and bring in more subscribers,” Ms. Silverman says. “As soon as possible, I want to make the magazine available on a quarterly basis, which I believe is necessary to attract more readers and advertisers.”

Thanks to a stockpile of previously purchased stories, Ms. Silverman will not immediately re-open the magazine to new submissions, but as soon as the need arises, an announcement will be made on the web site and in other venues.

All vendor and subscriber checks can continue to be made out to Space and Time Magazine. Effective immediately, all checks to Space and Time Magazine should mailed to: Space and Time Magazine, 1308 Centennial Avenue, Ste. 101, Piscataway, NJ, 08854. Space and Time Magazine is distributed to retail venues in the US by Ubiquity Distributors, Inc. and Ingram Periodicals, Inc. and overseas by Back Brain Recluse. Issue #100 will be a double-sized issue (96 pages) and provided to current subscribers at no extra cost, to be released this Spring. The retail cover price for this issue will be $10.00.
